Breaking It Down: Appreciating Dr. John

The late Dr. John, aka “The Night Tripper,” was someone who could always be counted on to challenge any musician playing alongside him.  We have a few of them gathered here.  Our latest podcast features a bunch of pros who got an up-close view of the experience of playing with this American legend.

Jeff Ganz has played with everyone from Roy Buchanan and Johnny Winter, to Ben Vereen and Rita Moreno.  Jeff is currently touring the nation with the Hit Men.

Rob Paparozzi is a Grammy-nominated singer and harmonica player who’s worked with The Original Blues Brothers Band, Blood Sweat and Tears, the Hudson River Rats and many others.

Frank Pagano is one of the top drummers in New York City. He’s worked with legendary artists such as Al Green, Laura Nyro, and Bette Midler, and is currently touring with the pioneering prog-rock band Renaissance.

Jon Paris is a veteran guitarist and bassist who’s worked alongside many of the giants of blues and rock and roll including Robert Gordon and Link Wray, Bo Diddley, Les Paul, and Chuck Berry.  Like my co-host Jeff Ganz, Jon also held down the bass chair in Johnny Winter’s band for many years.

John Montagna is a bass guitarist, singer, songwriter (but not a “singer-songwriter”) and Brooklyn Native. He has toured the world and elsewhere with Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, The Turtles (featuring Flo & Eddie) and many other legendary hit makers, and he created the theme music for the top-rated comedy podcast “WTF With Marc Maron.” John prefers to view his all-consuming obsession with The Beatles as an asset, rather than a liability.
