Vincent Van Gogh created some of the most distinct, enduring images ever: sunflowers, starry nights, painfully honest self-portraits. Now, you can see them in a completely new way thanks to [amazon template=left aligned image&asin=383654122X]a movie called Loving Vincent, a biopic of the troubled painter with a script drawn from 800 letters written by Van Gogh. The visuals however unfold via his paintings, each one painstakingly animated. Loving Vincent is billed as the first fully painted feature film in the world. Because 120 of Van Gogh’s paintings are used in the movie — and the animation process is sooooo painstaking — the creative team had to recruit many gifted oil painters to help out. Artists were invited to submit their portfolios via a website, and those who were accepted were trained in Van Gogh’s style at the studio. Nice way to spend your summer.

Loving Vincent is directed by Polish painter-director Dorota Kobiela.
